Statement:

Alex is a Masters student in Public Health at Arizona State University who is dedicated to serving underserved populations. After finishing a Masters in Public Health, Alex plans to go on to medical school and obtain an M.D. and PhD. While Alex finds dozens of specialties interesting, Alex has a particular interest in HIV, transgender hormone therapy, college student health, and GLBTQ health disparities.  

Alex is the Co-Director of GradOUT (along with walker Emily McLinden), an organization for GLTBQIA graduate students at ASU. Alex also serves as an Executive Director of the Queer Advisory Comission, an organization that tackles changes in policy and procedures for all GLBTQA students at ASU.  This past spring, Alex had the honor of receiving the 2010-2011 “Out of their Mind Award,” an award given to a graduate student dedicated to fighting homophobia, biphobia, and transphobia at ASU. When Alex isn’t fighting for the GLBTQA community, Alex is helping children and teens with food allergies or Ehlers Danlos Syndrome, serving as an advocate, camp counselor, and mentor.

Alex is excited to be a walker for the second year in a row, and knows that the experience will be just as life changing this year as it was last. After finding the perfect proposal location on last year’s walk, Alex returned to Sedona, proposed to his partner, and is now happily engaged. While Alex and Tracy have picked out a location for their wedding (The New York City Botanical Garden), they will wait to get married until their marriage is fully recognized.  While the walk is physically, mentally, and emotionally trying, Alex knows that when he is standing in the New York City Botanical Garden, exchanging vows with the love of his life, every step will seem well worth it.   

Alex enjoys spending time with Tracy and their cats (Peanut, Butter, Andfluf Onwheat, and Tigey). Alex has also recently taken up both golf and cycling, but loves doing anything that involves being outdoors!
